The Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival is first and foremost an event that pays tribute to and honors the men and women of our military. This years event was held on September 25, 2011 at Naval Air Station North Island. This video was shot inside the #77 car of military veteran Duane Norman. Duane is driving a 2000cc 1973 Datsun 510. One rare distinction of Duane is that he was the only quadriplegic driving in the competition. If you watch closely you will see how Duane controls both the brake and throttle with his left hand, while his right hand shifts and steers his car. Duane is probably the only driver on the course who at times has no hands on the wheel. If you watch the video until the end, which I hope you do... you will see the only assistance Duane needs is in exiting his race car. Duane is the head instructor for Cal-Diego Motorsports Program. This program has been designed to give the opportunity to those in the military and others with spinal cord injuries the chance to learn the skills of competitive driving. More information about the program can be found at http://www.caldiegopva.org This video is an entire racing session of Group 5 and runs 26 minutes. Sit back and enjoy racing alongside Duane Norman... it's the next best thing to being there in person. This video was shot by Steve Shelden of 16x9 Films and Fallbrook Digital Studios.
