  • Tell you what, Mr. OJL, I never doubted your taste -- but don't you think "meaningful" is a very subjective word, dependent on the preferences of the individual? I put these videos up to celebrate the players, and it makes me feel bad when a viewer -- with the best of intentions -- is less than generous to them.

  • Dear Mr.S.Y Cats, I sincerely regret my comments, not criticism, on the Shim Me Sha Wobble clip were not clearly defined, I was simply taken by Dans knee movements during the number, in particular at 5.55. In no way was I reflecting on Dans musicianship which I hold in very high esteem. Thank you for your excellent channel to which I have been happily subscribed for some time. I hope you continue this far into the future so spreading the gospel of Jazz

  • Watch 5.55 on the video to get the connect with the title.

  • Sorry Jon,mean the final chorus to end the number

  • @TheOldjazzlover Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoy our Ear sessions. Didn't realize you were referring to Dan's knee movements. Also not sure what you mean here, "catch the wobbles in the wrap?"

  • Sorry to be here again, but catch the wobbles in the wrap.

  • Hi again Jon Erik, the wobbles I was referring to, in a light hearted fashion, were Dan Blocks knee actions during his clarinet solo, appropriate to the tune. I am really sorry that my comments have caused you to spend so much time on them. I'm sure your time could be spent more productively. I really do love the music you and your friends make for our enjoyment. Your love of the music is obvious both visually and in the sounds you make. I hope you won't mind if I continue to enjoy your efforts.

  • Thank you for taking the time to Firstly I really, really appreciate what you do to promote the jazz music scene, I am sorry if my comments were taken as criticism ,only that I was disappointed in the lack (in my mind) of soloing. I think maybe I have been spoiled by the Sunday night at the Ear sessions where, after a head the traditional three chorus solo is usually taken. As a failed wannabe muso I am in awe at the abilities of such as Jon-Erik and his friends.

  • We return to the largely orchestrated melody/ensemble at 4:56, then cut loose from 5:26 to the end, improvised ensembles. This performance/arrangement is in keeping with the approach used on scads of classic traditional jazz recordings and performances that many people might mistake to be completely improvised, and not at all arranged or written out. Classics like Louis' Hot 5s and 7s, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Muggsy Spanier's Great 16, the ODJB, the NORK...all had arrangements.

  • There is a lot of improvising on this track, too. There are some "wobbles" that are written down (i.e. 1:41-2:01) that are statements of the melody there, but many (i.e 2:02-2:19) that are improvised. At 2:34 we play a loose, improvised ensemble, not orchestrated, but with me stating the real melody. Dan Block's solo at 2:55 is improvised, as are the other solos that follow (me on trumpet, Scott Robinson on sax, Marty Grosz on guitar, and Dan Barrett on trombone).

  • @TheOldjazzlover Hi TOJL -- I'm the trumpeter on this (Jon-Erik Kellso). Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but perhaps I can shed some light on the subject.

I, for one, didn't feel tied down by this arrangement. I enjoyed hearing and playing original sections and elements of this song that are seldom heard, arranged in a tastefully period way by Dapogny. to be continued:
