great looking herps, what about the cages, they are worth more than just newspaper

I have done all sorts of of substrates in the past. Everything from cypres mulch, spaghum moss, carefresh, Reptibark and coconut husk shredded. I kept coming back to newspaper for the most important reason, in my opinion, when a mess is made complete sanitation is quick, and easy. Snakes make a mess, I remove the paper, grab the spray bottle wth water/clorox mix, santize, dry, place fresh newspaper, and then put the snake back. Spot cleaning clumps out of your substrate does not apeal to me.

what about what is best for them? i've never spoken to a snake, but i've never i thought bloods liked to bury themselves?

seems like beauties like that would be happier in something similar to a natural environment. they look great, so you are clearly doing them right. not trying to blow you up, just curious as i'm considering getting a blood. -- thx

I do not keep my animals in "natural vivarium" type of setups for the reasons I listed above-Sanitation. A natural vivarium set up would have plants, soil, rocks/logs for a hide and a water source. Sounds great, right? (Look down for continuation)

What happens with all that nice setup is that the animal defecates and lives in that closed habitat. Meaning that waste must be removed and water added on a regular basis. In the wild an animal defecates and moves on. In a closed environment an animal defecates and has to continue to live in on or near its feces. Hot, humid environments cause bacteria, mold, and fungal growth. The only way to prevent that is for feces to be removed and the cage completely sanitized right after defecation.

Now to completely sanitize the cage you have to remove all of the dirt, plants, water source, and hides. Then you have to sanitize the cage, the plants(if plastic, if they are live plants then you can't), the hides, and then fill the cage full of fresh dirt(substrate) and put that back together. That becomes quite expensive and very time intensive even just for one animal.

The health of the animal is my most important concern. I keep my snakes on newspaper because I can insure that their habitats stay clean. I repeat that I have kept my snakes on naturalistic type habitats before and health is just easier maintained and managed when I use newspaper. Final note, do you curently keep reptiles? If so how many, what species and how old are they? I am just curious to know what is your experience level with reptiles. This is not meant in to be negative in any way.

what about putting down the news paper then the cypress mulch that way you can pick it all up at once still?
