  • i will agree to the fact that there are better technical dancers now, but the artistry that makes these two great is what is missing from most dancers today (gillian murphy, for example) it has become slowly more and more about technique and less about the art...however this choreography stands the test of time, i love it!

  • She dances with such ecstasy-- I would rather see that than super high extensions.

  • i admire melissa hayden because she is a REAL ballerina...not an act. what a wonderful opportunity to see this!

  • She was a friend and she was magnificent!

  • @mnannarone

throughout my almost 20 years in dance, i have never heard of a minimum height for a dancer...?

also, i saw gillian perform at school of the arts a long time ago. it is quite ironic that melissa taught her since the passion that melissa had didn't seem to translate to gillian.

  • @sweettbat

Interestingly, Ms Hayden was Ms Murphy's teacher at the North Carolina School of the Arts.

There is an old saying in ballet that your biology is your destiny. That is quite true today. However, Ms Hayden was a prodigy and quite short. However, these days, one must be at least 5' 6"

She a most amazing dancer and teacher. She died a few years ago is sorely

    missed.

  • They know HOW to dance...it's all passion!!!! NEVER boring! What happened to ballet :(

  • Correction...my old script says this was broadcast December 19, 1965.

  • There is a sweetness and delicacy to this pas de deux that breaks my heart...especially since I was there on the set that day in 1967 ... if anyone knows how to get a complete copy of the broadcast of this Christmas special (1967) I would love to know....

  • w-o-w...............

The "style" doesn't even look like that anymore....maybe it does....but not really.....it makes you replay this over and over again. All of Balanchine's generation dancers are so AMAZING to watch......

  • Does anyone know how tall Melissa is? I would love to be a ballerina like her one day, but I'm worried that I'm too tall. :(
