This is awesome lol

Keep in mind, after students have learned to play ta ta, titi, and other simple duple meter patterns, you have to introduce the visual symbols, i.e. the notes. Using this before your students have experienced playing/saying/internalizing those rhythms and keeping a steady beat would be pretty much pointless.

A little cheesy, but I think even middle schoolers would go for this. It's fun! No, it's not a replacement for teaching rhythms, but it's a great way to reinforce notation and the difference between short and long sounds. This video even uses appropriate verbal labels for rhythms (ta ta, titi, etc) which are some of the most widely used by music educators. Great resource!!

Haha cool, I finally know what this half, long etc notes are.

@pkweller I agree and disagree. If this was the only tool you ever used with students, yeah it wouldn't be enough. But I love this video as a quick review of note names (along with some idea of relative value)! Of course, after that we connect the notes to how much they're worth in relation to other notes and how to use them to create rhythms. But if they don't know what a quarter note looks like, they won't be able to use it to compose even if taught how.

@pkweller I teach elementary school and this is fantastic... its not dumbing down our subject... its giving us another learning tool.... whatever it takes to help our kids learn the better!

Love it, keep it up

teaching music this way is like teaching children how to read by making them memorize shakespeare. Just because someone knows what a quarter note looks like does not mean that they know how it functions or how to use it to compose. Thanks for dumbing down my subject matter.
