This is the animation "Leaving the Bonds of the Earth" from the early computer animation compilation "The Mind's Eye."

In 1990 Odyssey Productions gathered together shorts and demo reels from hundreds of artists working in the fledgling field of computer animation. These captivating computer generated videos were combined with an original score to give the world a look at the future of animation. Eventually these shorts would be licensed by YTV in Canada to be aired as "Short Circutz" in place of commercials.

Unlike later productions, The Mind's Eye was only released on VHS tape and Laserdisc. This is the higher quality Laserdisc release, carefully digitized.

  • I watched this a lot as a kid. The beginning bits were brighter-sounding and -looking. By the time the tape was coming to a close and getting to these later parts, I remember being scared and uneasy but couldn't look away.

One late night, some friends and I had been smoking and I showed this to them. It was quite an eerie trip!

  • Thank you posting these. I have the VHS and loved it.

  • That bird at the end is absolutely beayutiful!

  • The last animation sequence at 3:30 is pretty awesome. I love the way old CGI stuff looks. Notice the up and down jitter due to the fact that the CGI renderings were actually printed on 35MM FILM!!! wow! I just love the way CGI looks on old, grainy 35MM film. So awesome. We dont see that done much today, unless its shown in an older theater that still uses 35MM projectors. I loved the Minds Eye CGI animations. They kinda went down hill after Beyond The Minds eye (that was the best one).

  • Oh, man, thank you so much. To me, this version is the real version...
