On the wonderful beach of Mayto, along a stretch of a remote coastline about two hours south of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, lays this eco-friendly Sea Turtle Camp dedicated to the harvesting, hatching, and releasing of the baby sea turtles.
Here biologist Israel Llamas, assisted by his good friend Jorge, high school students and other volunteers, is in charge of patrolling the immense beach in search of nests, rescuing the eggs, incubating them and releasing new-born turtles late at night.
We spent there a long weekend, between 13th and 17th of February. It was a wonderful experience and offered us the perfect opportunity to combine a relaxing beach vacation with fulfilling work as volunteers.
in this video you can see the skeleton of a turtle we found on the beach while we were patrolling. Unfortunately longliners and shrimp trawlers kill hundreds of thousands of sea turtles each year.
The turtle camp at Playa Mayto depends entirely on sponsors and volunteers to assist in its conservation activities. Stephi Bookings and Sevenschools are going to sponsor a website for this project. If any of you would like to help the project with donations or with volunteering work, please let me know and Ill be pleased to help you.
