Horowitz certainly had a way with Scarlatti. He treats this sonata as subtly nuanced piano music yet remains faithful to the underlying spirit. I believe that this performance illustrates the wisdom of a great artist being true to himself rather than to history.

out of this world. I take it this is the one when he was well.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. His diminuendos and subtle tempo changes are breath taking. It takes real maturity to create such detail in a performance.

Wow!! I've often imagined what his return to Tokyo would have sounded like, thank you so much! What a triumphant comeback!! This is magnificent playing - so thoughtful, emotional and self-assured. At 83 years old and after his recent ill-health he almost defies belief, but if anyone could do it, VH could!!!! Sounds like a close-up recording and quality is way too good for an audience pirate though. Audio from a video or radio broadcast perhaps?
What a difference three years makes! Yes, he was
unpoisoned and had a functional neuromuscular system
when this one was recorded. Duh.

and his "booboo in tokyo" (paraphrasing dubal, quoting v.h.) probably gave him a lot to think about. he became a deeper man by seeing what it was like to lose what he had always had - and in front of thousands of people.
