Cat Osterman, the USA's 2008 Olympic softball team pitcher, discusses techniques for achieving more spin in a softball pitch. In 2004, Osterman and her American teammates took a gold medal in softball at the Olympic games in Athens, Greece. Well, I think just focus on trying to get as pure spin as possible. I initially have a with me. I didnÕt bring on the trip but I used to put electrical tape around the ball and we made sure it was perfectly lined up dead center on the ball. And trying to get most pure spin means that if you were technically doing it at 100 correct, that tape would be in a straight line, you know, and youÕd be able to see that line the whole way. And I actually after a while could get the lines be straight and I work and work on getting the straight line. I mean, Dad and I never settled for a wobbly line and everyday is work, just couldnÕt get it straight. And IÕd yell until, you know, I was going to face that it was just a wobbly day and I wasnÕt gonna get it straight. But being able to throw all three pitches by the of high school with a straight line helped because the more pure your spin is, the more sharp your is, and itÕs not a gradual curve. ItÕs an actual break. So I think work on snapping the lid but then at the same time making sure your spin in cracked and not settling for something just coz you thought it moved.
