@focus2aus Basically, monitors are speakers that face band members while they play. They can essentially hear what they are playing over the loud crowd, etc.....yes, some where ear pieces.

he's fucking perfect
-
@focus2aus monitors are the speakers, at his feet, that are pointing to him. It's so he can hear his voice and guitar while he plays. Sometimes when someone's performing and the speakers are all pointed at the audience, the person can't hear things in the right mix, so it throws them off.

@BestIntentions It doesn't look like he's using them here. "the monitors" he's refering to would be floor placed speakers directed directly up at the musician. Each guy has the option of mixing the output to his preference. It's so you can hear yourself over all the ambient noise of a live performance. If the whole band was playing, then he did this solo piece, the monitors would be extremely "hot" for one guy.

Don't you love the way we are so into the band that we don't just listen to the songs? We focus, analyze, pontificate, consider, discuss, dissect, ruminate, and reconsider. Meanwhile the good joo joo that is the DMB is just sinking into the marrow of our bones.

@TheSassytiger Have you seen the version from Dave and Tim at Radio City? It's great. Better, even, than this, and this is good! And you're going to need a box of kleenex for this song!

@BestIntentions i have one of those recordings.. it is without a doubt the most entertaining DMB cd i have.

Another just simple and totally sublime accoustic piece by the man. Just wonderful.

@BestIntentions As one who has been in live audio performance settings myself, I can say with certainty that a monitor is a speaker that is placed in front of a musician at a tilted angle and turned up to a volume such that the performer can hear his own playing or singing. Because this was a low-key, quiet performance, Dave did not need to hear himself so loudly.
What are the monitors that he is talking about?

I would guess that Dave is referring to an IEM...the "in ear monitor" that he often uses. Perhaps someone more "in-the-know" can enlighten us.
Incidentally, his whole band wears IEM's when they are on stage. During some concerts Dave can be seen talking and laughing with the other members of his band.
AND...Some tech-geniuses (of which I am not), with the right equipment (which I don't have), are able to record those CANDID & extremely amusing conversations.(Team-DMB doesn't appreciate it)
