ANCHOR:
Rising water levels are continuing to flood areas in central and northern Bangladesh. Two hundred thousand people have been forced to leave and over two hundred and fifty thousand acres of farmland is now under water. Here's more on how locals are coping.
STORY:
Here in central Bangladesh, homes are flooded and villagers are relying on boats to get around. Most are struggling to find drinking water, food and fuel to cook with. They say there is not enough relief supplies as conditions deteriorate.
[Sohag Begum, Villager]:
"For the last eight days we were stuck in the flood waters, we couldn't move. Now we are repairing our boat. As it is the month of Ramadan, we are facing problems cooking food. Too much suffering."
And rising river levels on the weekend means some rivers like the Jamuna are flowing a meter above the danger mark.
[Nasiruddin Miah, Boatman]:
"My home and fields are flooded; all my cattle are standing in water. We're facing so many problems. Now I am trying to earn my livelihood by carrying people with this boat."
Forecasts say the floods could start receding in some areas today.
The monsoon season runs from June and to September and is vital for the irrigation of farmland. But low-lying countries like Bangladesh often suffer massive damage from the cyclones and flooding.
