After a series of high profile sectarian attacks against protestant civilians by the IRA the British government moved to ban Sinn Fein from the airwaves due to their public support for Irish ethnic cleansing.
Whilst Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness were able to appear on television they were not permitted to speak for fear that their hate filled speeches would incite more young catholics to join the IRA's campaign of bigotry.
This ban was lifted when the IRA surrendered in 1994.
