O violão ganhou o mundo à partir do século 18. Já com as 6 cordas e a mesma afinação de hoje.
No Brasil, entretanto foi longo o seu caminho para sair da marginalidade. Somente no século XX ele foi aceito socialmente e pode entrar nas salas de concertos, mas o violão está profundamente ligado a cultura musical brasileira. Aqui podemos nos emocionar com dois violonistas clássicos brasileiros, o Duo Assad, considerado um dos melhores do mundo, formado pelos irmãos Sérgio e Odair Assad, que começaram a estudar violão com o pai, um músico amador e aperfeiçoaram-se com a violonista argentina Monina Távora que foi discípula de Andrés Segóvia.
Como tantos outros violonistas brasileiros, não receberam aqui o devido apoio e tiveram que buscar o reconhecimento lá fora.
Em 1979 iniciaram uma brilhante carreira internacional, afinal, um Duo de violonistas clássicos é preciosidade em todo o mundo.
O Duo apresenta uma preciosidade em técnicas eruditas com um molho popular, numa combinação de velocidade, virtuosismo e emoção.
