Laptop crashes during gig...What next? Precautions to take

All I can say is from my own personal experience. I have tried both Mac and PC, and I have had just as many problems and freezes with the Mac as the pc laptop. The key is to have it DEDICATED for music - have nothing else on there except your music software. Just speaking from my own experience.

I personally think that If you only use the laptop for DJ'ing only you shouldn't have a problem, as well as ensuring you do weekly cleaning and ensure your not using it for other processes such as Word processing and internet surfing. My HP 17'' 1tb laptop is in TIP-TOP shape and has never gave me any problems because its all I use it for. When djing that should be your main focus. Just my two cents.

Not a bad idea. But you will prob be replaying tracks you had just banged out live. You will look retarded.
Just have a few good vinyls on hand. Prob the fastest thing you can do.

I like your idea about the two laptops. But wouldn't it be a bit better to have both hooked up to a 4 channel mixer, and instead of taking out the usb to connect to laptop #2, just simply bring up the mixer volume for laptop 2 and simply press play to the track that crashed on laptop 1. I just think this would literally take 3-5 sec. instead of taking out the usb and putting it in laptop 1, which could take about 10-20. Either way the 2 laptop approach is the way to go for the peace of mind

thats true i have a macbook pro 15 inch the I.7 and its excellent but you dont want to take any chances so use the time machine and back up all you music or a flash drive !

Good advice on the Mac, I run a Macbook Pro/4gigs RAM with Algoriddim DJay software on it. The external 1TB drive from Seagate does fine via Firewire. I come out of the Laptop USB into a Native Instruments Audio2Djay Sound Card into an American Audio CK-1000 dual CD Mixer, my CD Mixes are the backup on disc. However, I've had down time (between shows)and will be getting another laptop as backup.

easier way bro just keep an iPod or a CD Player handy then there is no worries i dont even stress this issue at all.
This saddens me.
Everybody is a DJ now because of this shit.

My video or comment here has nothing to do with the "overpopulation" of DJ's these days, although I agree with you 100%. Sadly, the growth of technology with laptops and Serato, VirtualDJ, etc, you know it was bound to happen sooner or later. I agree with you 100% though, although its not really anyone's fault that these "dollar DJ's" have infested the industry. Serato does not do it all for you, the laptop is merely an aid, or a helper if you will for songs.

Just because you use a mac does not mean the machine will never crash, hence my video :)

The best idea ever is to have an ipod with your own mix tape on it, plugged right into your mixer. If your laptop crashes just hit play on ipod. Your own mix tape should be about 60 min plus so that should give you enough time to restart laptop, then you can beatmatch out of your ipod back into your live set.
