Nah, it has more to do with the activity of the thumbs. If you ever grab anything with the 'false' grip, you'll see how it takes the work out of your arms and puts it back in the shoulder joint (which is being articulated by the lat in this exercise). Another good example is the use of the hook grip on olympic lifts, which prevents you from trying to yank the bar with your arms since you're not holding it as tight, but rather, relying on the bar to pinch your thumb to your finger.

i would have though using a thumbless grip would make it harder to grip and so making your forearms have to work harder? rather than the other way...
