Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi, the new chife of IDF

A new Chief of General Staff for the IDF: In a grand ceremony that took place today, (Wednesday) at Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's Residence, Major General (res.) Gabi Ashkenazi, was appointed the 19th IDF Chief of General Staff, receiving the rank of Lieutenant General.

Lieutenant General Ashkenazi will replace Lieutenant General Dan Halutz- the departing Chief of General Staff. Lieutenant General Halutz assumed this position in June of 2005, and will be bringing more than 40 years of service in the IDF to a close. The ceremony took place in the presence of the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defense Mr. Amir Peretz, and other ministers, Members of Knesset, the General Staff Forum, and other guests.
