Joan Sutherland turned 82 on the 7th of November, this is is a little birthday tribute, also please note that Joan fell and broke both her legs earlier this year, so let's all pray for her speedy recovery.

Here we have Luciano Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland singing libiamo ne' lieti calici from act I of Verdi's La Traviata during Joan Sutherland's famous tour of Australia. They both sound extraordinary, everyone always picks on her diction, which was only really an intrusive problem later on. Although not perfect here, the diction is certainly passable. Both these voices were sent by God to sing together, enjoy them in all their glory.

  • One of the best ever cast for this opera. Not really a fan of Sutherland but I can't deny that this was a vocal phenomenon.

    Hope she gets well soon.

  • Pav sounds nothing like himself yet.

  • @mauriciomille "Brindisi" is the Italian word for "drinking song". "libiamo ne'lieti calici" is part of the first line of the aria meaning "Let's drink from this merry chalice!".

  • @jenni4claire libiamo ne'lieti calici' is the same aria than brindisi?....thanks a lot, because the opera is la traviata!

  • This is great. Is there a complete recording available?

  • She trills and without taking a breathe she holds the higher tone. WHO ELSE? 99% of singers would need to take a breath after a trill!

  • SIMPLY THE BEST.

  • Fantastic from both. The size of joan's voice is mesmerazing....

  • Bravi!

(butt they sounds a little strange)

  • Magnificient!

  • Man what a beautiful song. I love this.
