The only reason there is a Playstation is because Nintendo didn't like the idea that they weren't making any money off using CDs. Sony would be. There was going to be a Sony/Nintendo, but NIntendo wanted to continue making money off cartridge sales.
Don't forge that there was also the Sega Genesis which also did well, but SNES did come out on top.
