A collection of my favorite macro images taken with a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens in 2008. The photos range from 2x to 5x life size, and all of the insects were alive. For more images, and tutorials on how I shoot macro, please see my web site: www.johnkimbler.com

  • Very cool pictures. I almost bought the canon 100 macro lens and after looking at this pic, i think I'll go with the MPE-65mm macro :)

  • @stephane1234567 If you can use the EF-S60mm it is a much better "starter lens" for macro. The MPE-65mm has a very steep learning curve if it is your first macro lens...

Okay I will try to find user reviews for this lens as well. I already shoot macrophotography, but with a 50 mm lens and a twin ring flash, the result was impressive but details are not good enough. So i ordered kenko extension tubes last week, hoping it will help me in my macrophotography sessions. Then next step in a few weeks is the lens xD. Thank you for all your useful info, good job.

  • @stephane1234567 If you are already using Canon's 50mm then you're at half life size (the 50mm isn't a true macro lens since it can't hit 1x without the Life Size Converter). Check out my blog, No Cropping Zone, for details (I can't post a link to it here -Youtube won't allow it).

  • @Dalantech

its like assuming you'll sound like David Gilmour if you buy a fancy american fender stratocaster...

MPE-65mm is VERY hard to use... you need a true master to acheive what you see here

  • @badgermost You can occasionally find mint condition MPE-65s on E-bay because peeps think that all they need is the glass... ;)

  • Hey great vid! I have been attempting to shoot some macro vids on the 550D with an 18-200mm reversing ring.. Would really love to shoot vid at f16 400iso however with the two LED light panels & the recently made a 200w light from car driving lights + 12v battery I still do not have enough light. What is the f/stop you manage to shoot vid at & do you think the Canon MP-E 65mm would help?

  • Awesome video! I need to get that canon lens. I have been shooting all of my macro with the canon 180mm.

Do you ever use the 180mm macro?

  • @Dalantech Yes I have the canon 50 mm and I bought extension tubes today to start macro photographies techniques. My first impressions: it's hard to get very good shots, it was kind of windy today, and I was without a tripod. On the 36 mm lens, it was next to impossible to do something. I read you blog so that i can take advice from you since you're an expert.
