Australian M113 Gavins Save the Day in East Timor!

While Clinton's U.S. Army Chief of Staff Shinseki's ("Ski") minions TALKED about C-130 air-transportable strategic contingency forces since the bloated LAV-IIIs they bought based on prejudices, pork and pride can't fly combat loaded anywhere by Herks, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and Royal Australian Armored Corps (RAAC) and their superb light infantry were DOING crisis response with C-130s and M113 Gavins to save the day in East Timor.

So scratch any light tracked, mobile force being flown in rapidly and fanning out to block OBL's escape routes into Pakistan! Instead a showy fly-in of foot-slogger gyrenes was done to pretend like we were doing something when really the Northern Alliance with Russian-supplied light and medium tracked armor was doing the work of ousting the Taliban regime. But "Afghanistan isn't tank country!" the light foot sloggers may cry. Planet Earth and the laws of physics "didn't get their memo" on pet mission prejudices and LIGHT TANKS/APCs are mobile in CLOSED TERRAIN that is steep, rocky and vegetated. Since most of Afghanistan is OPEN TERRAIN in the valleys that is most definitely medium to heavy "tank country" as our NATO allies have learned:

Aussies use them in Vietnam war and few of them you see on vid of M113 in East Timor were prolly "Vietnam vet",

Absolutely; the only real success story on the ground in Vietnam was the M113 Gavin ACAVs; even the ARVN in M113s could defeat the NVA on foot; our mistake was trying to clone them into Huey 'copter foot sloggers from fire bases with short-range tube howitzers; the NVA superior on foot encroached on the ARVN foot-sloggers and then smashed them with long-range M46 130mm guns; result was loss of South Vietnam due to military incompetence

It was a united nations mandate, backed by the United States of America and China dumbarse, Indonesia has about as much chance of holding east timor again as the bali bombers do of getting resurected.
