  • That CD Drive beside it, Is that a Mitsumi? It's in my old PC.

  • @bpmagruder Indeed, it is a Mitsumi CD-Drive, 24x Read, if I remember correctly ;)

  • Why is there not a head on the topmost layer?

And WTF is a DOS 7.1?

  • @HoneycombAgent As to why there is no head on the top layer: I have no idea, ask the engineers! :D

I suspekt for technical or financial reasons. The topmost arm would be a special design, because all other arms each have a pair of heads on these flat springs, which press to the surfaces below and above. So there is no head on the bottommost layer as well, all existing arms have heads for 2 surfaces under and above it. Perhaps its cheaper to just magnetize half of a platter...

  • @HoneycombAgent MS DOS 7.1 is an unofficial DOS Version never distributed by Microsoft as Stand-Alone! It consists of the core files of the underlying DOS of the Windows 98SE Operating System, which incorporate several bugfixes and new features. Windows 98SEs DOS, however, is incomplete, as it is missing most normal DOS utilities and programs, so there exist inofficial installation packages which install a complete and useable DOS 7.1!

  • @Dazzerlikestech1 about 80 Megabytes unformatted... You're thinking in completely other dimensions ;D

10GB back in the 1980s was only feasible in large datacenters...

  • this is wonderful... this drive it is very old and still works!! :D

  • @346L3 Maybe it wast supposed to read the bottom instead of the top.

  • @346L3 Why didnt you use the Original Screws and didnt Seal the Cover?

  • @HoneycombAgent I dont know, but I think youre right.

  • @MrComputerfan

Not all hard disks can be made with platters as perfect as possible. If there had been some defects on one side of the platter but none on the other side, only one side can be used for storing data. However, using the side with the defects can cause problems and further exacerbate any damage on the head stack.

  • @HoneycombAgent Why Platter defects?

  • @MrComputerfan Platter defects on one side

  • @HoneycombAgent I dont know, Those Drives have a special Arm with only one Head,

they could have 80gb with two heads, but they only have one for some reason.

  • @MrComputerfan But wait a minute, wouldn't adding a head on those slimline drives make it not so slim at double the capacity?
