In this clip from the 1950's-60s British comedy group "Beyond the Fringe," Dudley Moore plays a very funny but also very musically well-done parody of a Beethoven Piano Sonata, using the famous whistling tune from "Bridge Over the River Kwai" as a thematic subject.

A VERY great pianistic -- and MUSICAL -- talent! I would love to have heard him play a "straight" recital.

I have a feeling it would have been thoroughly enjoyable on its own merits minus all the antics for which he was so famous.

He was really very handsome too.

I disliked his movies. This is FAR superior.

Anther black mark against pop culture that his TRUE gift was not fully recognized or properly rewarded.

I'm so sorry his life ended tragically.

Those who are more academic than I may correct me, but in essence, the Beethoven sound si about long and insistent rhythmic passages, emphasis on passion rather than elegance, juxtapositions of contrasting sections, and false endings. Dudley Moore captured all that very well. Actually this is also an affectionate homage to Beethoven as well, since really you can only parody someone when their sound is absolutely unique and unmistakable. There is only one Beethoven.

I find it funny because it has so many natural places where it could end but instead it carries on for ages. Its that defying of expectations which is funny to me.

He played many straight recitals, including duets (I forget who with unfortunately). They're around, and he really shows his talent :)
