TRANSCRIPT:
CHARLIE GIBSON: Finally tonight, a bit more of our conversation with Sarah Palin . . . I asked her about some comments she made regarding Iraq. The comments were made to the congregants of her former church.

[cut to interview]

GIBSON: You said recently in your old church, our national leaders are sending US soldiers on a task that is from god.

[cut to Palin in church]

SARAH PALIN: Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right also for this country that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from god.

[cut to interview]

GIBSON: Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: The reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincolns words when he said, first he suggested never presume what gods will is. And I would never presume to know what gods will is or to speak gods words. But what Abraham Lincoln had said and thats a repeat in my comments. Was, let us not pray that god is on ur side,in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on gods side. Thats what that comment was all about Charlie. Today is the day that I send my firstborn, my son, my teenage son, overseas with his striker brigade, 4,000 other wonderful American men and women to fight for our country, for democracy for our freedoms.

GIBSON: But you went on and said, there is a plan and it is gods plan.

PALIN: I believe that there is a plan for this world and that that plan for this world is for good. I believe that there is great hope and great potential for every country to be able to live and be protected with inalienable rights, which I believe are god-given Charlie. I believe that those are the rights to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That, in my worldview, is the grand plan.

GIBSON: But then, are you sending your son on a task that is from god?

PALIN: I dont know if the task is from god Charlie. What I know is that my son has made a decision, I am so proud of his independent and strong decision, what he has made is to do, in serving for the right reasons, in serving something thats greater than self, in not choosing an easy path where he could be more comfortable and certainly safer.

  • It's funny to think if Obama (hypothetically) gave the very answers Palin gave, his fans would praise every word of it. Charlie Gibson might pause, smile, and nod a bit more as he spoke.

  • I`ll vote for her, she`d be so pretty in the white house, she`d make our country so beautiful.

  • YES! Because of her son and all the military men and women is the reason you are able today to speek as freely as you do! You should show some respect our military whether you agree with it or not!

  • I hope you never reproduce.

  • tough question?these are basic questions..omg*********** this sounded like a high school interview..why are she calling him by his first name? terrible

  • People worry about theocratic Iran having nukes yet we got this Christian Taliban nutjob with a hand on a button, if elected. The last time we heard this "task from God" crap it was Hitler "acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator". He also wrote: "And so, internally armed with faith in the goodness of God and THE IMPENETRABLE STUPIDITY OF THE ELECTORATE,the struggle for what is called 'the reconstruction of the Reich' can now begin."Sounds like US fascist neo-cons' motto.

  • Check the video of Palin talking to her church. She is not saying or paraphrasing what Lincoln said. He said we should pray that our actions are inline with God's will. She said (paraphrasing) that the US soldiers are on a task from God. Scary to have a Govenor and a VP candidate (of the entire United State!) who can state such a thing in 2008.

  • Gibson, you're a fucking pussy! Way to ask the tough questions. You asshole!!!

  • You know what? Charlie probably feels so strongly that she is not qualified, he had a difficult time suppressing it. As a reporter, he should try his best to hide that distain, but he's only human. Maybe a reporter from Fox News would have conducted an interview to your expectations?

Gibson is qualified for his job, unlike your precious hockey mom that would go to war with a Nuclear Power over a tiny breakaway state like Russia, that means nothing to America.

  • To CindyFahy: I completely disagree with you. Gibson was fair and courteous by any standard. Palin is the one who was on edge and showing signs of extreme discomfort. And it is no wonder. She is out of her league here. She didn't know what the Bush Doctrine was! She could not address the quesions asked in an intelligent manner. Her answers were off the mark and flawed. Also... very sad to see her cashing in on her son's noble deployment as a campaign asset. Her actions speak.
