Besides driving a punch into your face by responding to a punch by rotating a tan into a bong, you can also get nailed with a huen style "top bong" that easily bypasses your defenses. This happens when your opponent appears to be collapsing or cho kil but he is instead closing the distance from "chi sau range" to "striking range". Ouch. Watch and learn. ;-)
Then come for short visits, learn, then teach and help preserve and promote this precious gem that relies not on speed or power (though they are there) but instead on an immutable physics of interaction. Immutable. Nice. ;-)
Fundamental flaw at 4:25. Tom has collapsed onto assailant but has assumed the assailant's tan is stationary. If we're talking wing chun, his tan sao would attack as tom collapses.. Tom has overlooked the possibility that assailant will attack from Tan Sao....

Excellent comment. However. Having been forced to look at my own video, gasp! I have complete control of the tan due to my wrist-to-wrist contact and holding it slightly to the center. That tan aint going anywhere. Supposedly.

So you would never use a bong in actual combat ? But instead a biu-sau or another tool as opposed to the bong unless in chi-sau ?

Good question. I would absolutely use a bong. It's a great tool and essential too. What I hopefully would not do is to allow an opponent to close the distance to enter the striking range and overcome my bong due to my ignorance. I also would not go from tan to bong to drive a punch up into my face. Did I make a third point? I don't recall but if I did it was not... to never use a bong in combat. By the way, I too, am a fanofkimboslice.

if the bong has proper forward intent, it will just turn into an attack when your opponent lifts the elbow like that, it will render that hand coming over the bong useless even if it connects (touches) as there's no power/structure behind it. why chase the hand when the way is open to come forward?

It's not about chasing the hand but instead not mistaking what is really a huen over the bong to be powerless. It takes the bong to the outside & now enters the center from the top. It takes no power to strike the throat and terminate the engagement. None of these circumstances would be a consideration if the opponent was not collapsing and overcoming. With proper distancing and understanding this will never happen. So good kung fu, no problems!
