The XB-70 "Valkyrie," a Mach 3+ intercontinental nuclear bomber, began development in the late 1950s by North American Aviation. It was designed to deliver nuclear bombs deep into the former USSR. The "Valkyrie" was a large six-engine aircraft capable of cruising Mach 3+ at an altitude of 70,000 feet (21,000 meters) to avoid conventional interceptors. However, with the introduction of the highly effective high altitude surface-to -air missiles (SAMs) plus the use of inercontinental ballistic missles (ICBMs) and overall high costs of development/construction lead to the cancellation lead to its cancellation in 1961. Testng continued (1964-1960) with the two prototypes constructed. One was lost in a mid air collision in 1966. The other, retired, is on display at the U.S. Air Force Museum, Dayton, Ohio. When the B-70 Mach 3+ was developed the USAF was faced with the problem of how to defend aginst existing and future USSR air-defense weapons. The proposed solution was the DAMS (Defensive Ant-Missile System). One possible solution was a radical missile design developed under prroject code-named "Pye Wachet in 1957-1960 by Convair. The "Pye Wachet" missile was a basically circular flying disc and was formally called the Lenticular Defense Missile (LDM). Wind tunnel studies at the Arnold Engineering Devleopment Center (AEDC) showed the "Pye Wacket" (named after the cat in the movie (Bekkm Biij & Candle - 1958) high supersonic stability and lift even in extreme angles of attack. As of 2012 very little information and data is available leaving one to wonder if a hypersonic cicrular vehicle currrently exists undercover. (davidmyhra@gmail.com)
