Ira, I KNOW you're going to correct me on this one (since you have the original kinnie with the correct date on the leader), so I'll beat you to it: this was originally telecast in DECEMBER 1953, as Dorothy Parker made her speech before that Communist Party gathering on December 17th, and Winchell's alternate sponsor, Carter Products [the makers of Rise shaving cream], is using a Christmas pitch in their ad at the end of the show....sorry!

correction: that crisis in Texas was a trainwreck, not shipwreck

Ship in Texas sank, murdered mobster in NYC, revolutionaries in Puerto Rico, - none of them identified. Did any of this happen?
Interesting video, especially when he gets to the cancer studies.

This edition was first telecast in November 1953, shortly after Robert F. Wagner Jr. was elected Mayor of New York [listen for the item on him, about to announce his appointment for police commissioner, at :59--the "winner" was Francis W.H. Adams, who served during 1954-'55].

Walter Winchell had a TV simulcast of his 15 minute Sunday night "news and commentary" radio program on ABC from 1953 through '55 [9-9:15pm(et); that's why there's a "time signal" at the start of the program]- but something was lost in the transition. When you SAW him on TV, it just wasn't the same as hearing him on radio. Perhaps it was the fact that he usually wore his hat on camera to hid his balding head. Gruen Watch Company sponsored him, and this is a "typical" example of what he did...
