It is not top down knowledge of faces overriding lower sensory processing that makes this work from what I can see. The illusion on this film still works when I cover the face, limiting it to the hat brim only. What destroys the illusion is the edges of the mask rotating to the point of contradicting the default convexness on the shading (highlight is apex, shading recedes in relation to local highlight). It is our mental fixation on faces that label this as a face mask illusion, but it isn't.

I just read about this in a book and had to find some way of seeing it for myself. God damn it, brain! Show me what things really look like! I don't care if I'd need to eat five hippos a day to support that kind of impulse firing!

originally it was hollow, then I had to concentrate to make it convex, and now i can't see it as hollow anymore!
