Dr. Joshua Miele demonstrates the WearaBraille, a new virtual wireless Braille keyboard, as an input device to an iPhone running the built-in VoiceOver screen reader. The technology was developed at the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute by Dr. Miele and engineering fellow Owen Edwards, and presented at CSUN (The Annual International Technology & Persons with Disabilities Conference) in 2010 and 2011.

The project described was supported by the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute and by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.

  • This is super kewl. Can you do the braille input without making contact with the table or is the "stop" from the tap how it recognizes input?

  • Glad you like it! We're detecting taps on a firm surface like the table for input, but we're working on improving the detection. Keep watching this channel for more info...

  • wow this is totally neat. how can I get more updates from this product? this would be great for people that don't want to cary around a bt keyboard.

  • Very cool!

  • I just have one word in my mouth after watching this video. "WOWWWW"

  • That's pretty cool! Nice work

  • This would be awesome. Typing on the iPhone would be enjoyable again!

  • That was the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. And it'll actually help people, rather than blow them up. Amazing work, Doctor. : )

  • Love the movie. Dr. Miele is nice to watch and the product looks great. Good luck on developing.

  • Really interesting technology. It looks like, at the moment the accelerometers have each finger associated with one button. Do you think this system could be made to distinguish between finger taps in multiple locations? That could allow for some pretty interesting input possibilities, including a virtual QWERTY keyboard.

  • Saw this through Reddit and applaud such great work! Hope more and more people see this.
