This mural was created to celebrate the coupling of the k500 and k1200 cyclotrons. The execution of the project as a whole took around 5 months, 4 for planning and preliminary drafts, and 1 month for execution, painting (view time laps photography sequence of the creation of the mural.)
The mural came to be created after Walt Benenson saw a 25m mural at Michigan State's International Center created by Henrique Bertulani (see "Transforming Walls" article in the State News). Although the artist's father Carlos Bertulani had been a visiting professor about 7 years before, the association only helped, for Walt seeing the potential of having a son of a particle physicist interpret the coupling of two accelerators proved to be successful. Henrique Bertulani graduated in Anthropology and currently lives in Rio de Janeiro where he has continued to paint outdoor and indoor murals.
