David Murray : Chelsea Bridge

This comes from 1991 Fresh Sounds duets albums, "Tea For Two," featuring tenor saxophonist David Murray with pianist George Arvanitas. It's a unique setting for Murray, and the album is a pleasure from start to finish. I met David at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival some years ago. As it turned out, he needed a ride to Seattle to get his flight there. I was nominated to drive him. We left early, not sure how long we'd be delayed at the border. After we whistled through and David realized he had a bit of extra time, he went through his things, looking for the address of a friend in Seattle. It turns out that his friend wasn't doing well, was on dialysis, and in dire financial straits. I didn't eavesdrop, but judging by the smile and hug as we got ready to head to the airport, I think David took care of his friend. Just one of those stories from the jazz life. David Murray is a brilliant player. In duet with George Arvanitas, David tells an old tune, "Chelsea Bridge," in his own way. In the accompanying photographs, I hoped to create a jazz club 'feel'.
