Before we were introduced to the Master, there was the War Chief!

Clips taken from The War Games - Doctor Who (Patrick Troughton's last serial - not including the later guest appearances he made when he reprised his role as the Doctor)

  • i really believe that this war cheif is the first time we see the master. he knew the doctor on galifrey and had little scruples. when the doctor gets the him killed we dont see him regenerate. could this be what makes the master go after his potential friend after the timelords turn up and they nick him? remember in the terror of the autons the timelord tells the doc that the master escaped? i thought that for 13 years. or not.

  • Thank you for your comment. I thought that at first also, but there is novel that is suppose to include both the master and the war chief as different people (Divided Loyalties by Gary Russel). So, I guess it depends on if you accept the novels as part of the Doctor Who universe. I haven't read it yet, but I plan on doing so. I also want to read Terrance Dick's novel "Timewyrm: Exodus" because it has the War Chief in it as well. Thanks again for the comment. Have a great day!

  • I beleive so as well. My opinion is when the war chief is shot down he is dead for a while then regenerates into the Delgado Master.

  • @mayotango what we see in the neil gaimans episode is the the box that the doctor used in the war games to call the time lords.

  • ¡The War chief returns in series 6:! in the Neil Gaiman's episodie will contain something - or someone - that we have not seen since "The War Games".

And the New Yorker Festival, Gaiman revealed that Surrane Jones' character Idris "…may very well be an "old acquaintance" of the doctor with a "new face.

  • actually are we sure hes dead? internet movie data base for episode 3 i think it is of the upcoming matt smith series has a character called war chief on it and when i clicked on warchief in that episode it went straight to dr who wargames.

  • What a handsome, evil, scheming so and so he is. I'm in love...

  • The only licensed product, the old FASA RPG claimed that the Master to be the same as the War Chief (and the Monk) though kater changed him into an old ally of the Master.

'Time's Champion' implies that the War Chief and the Master are one and the same however that was a charity novel, and certainly un-authorized and un-canonical. It may or may not be a good read but the NAs and EDAs contradict this aspect and they are authorised and possibly canonical. I like to think the NAs are at least.

  • The Master? To me, it's a failure of imagination, and a surrender to cliche i.e. "The War Chief is an 'evil' Time Lord, therefore he must be the Master".

Isn't it more interesting to think of him as another rogue Time Lord? Doesn't that add more depth to their race? God save us from authors! Thankfully the books can safely be ignored, since any idiot can write one (and it seems one did).

Love the War Chief though! The moment him and the Doctor clock each other is amazing.

  • I'm not sold. In Terror of the Autons, the Doctor recognized the Master and addressed him by name. In the War Games, the Doctor does not know who the War Chief is, and certainly doesn't address him as The Master. Besides, this connection has never been made by the production team of classic or NuWho. And as for the (lack of) regeneration, the creative staff had yet to establish the rules (or name) of regeneration, simply referring to the process as a change of appearance, unconnected to death.

  • And then of course he met his come-uppance with Timothy Claypole.

  • The Times Champion novel suggests the War Cheif is The Master
