Short news coverage of the CUPE 3903 strike ending. While I agree with certain points on both sides, I'm glad this is over with. Its about time. I don't even go to York, my girlfriend does, and its been very hard paying rent for months of wasted time.
I do think that CUPE was being unreasonable given the economic problems, and should have settled on the 10.7% they were offered. Thats a huge raise. Huge. To demand more is just absurd. Also, don't demand 5 year contracts for TA's who want to become professors. If you suck, then the University shouldn't be tied into having you for 4 more years. If you are good, then you will stay.
Its really a shame that CUPE's demands were so high, otherwise this strike could have ended a week in... What was the initial raise CUPE wanted again? Around 30-40% raise? Ridiculous... If you only work 10 hours a week *cough* CUPE President, then get another job, or go to another university that offers you more courses to work. Then in turn, you will get more money, and not be "below the poverty line".
And to top it off they tried to raid a police station...
Thanks for posting.
