On Thursday, July 30, 2009, advocates for a Single Payer Healthcare system (Medicare Expanded for All) stormed Capitol HIll, in Washington, D.C. This date marks the 44th birthday of the Medicare program. Taxis circled Capitol Hill with Single Payer signs hanging from their windows; cup cakes and birthday cards were delivered by activists to each Congressional office; and rousing speech making took place at the Upper Senate Park, just south of the U.S. Capitol.
One of the speakers at the rally was Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the architect of S 703.
For background on Single Payer, see: http://www.healthcare-now.org and

Schools? Are you kidding me? And those others are public utility and protective services. Oh, and there is only one thing in your list that the Constitution has actually given the federal government to do, and that's the military.
How about Medicaid and Medicare? The "war on poverty", the "war on drugs"? The fact is this type of system won't do anything to bring down costs. Its only goal is to give more control to the federal government.

Your police department, your fire department, your library, your schools, your street, your army, your parks, your water system...any questions?

Yes, single payer has worked so well in other countries. The truth is if those 1300 insurance companies were allowed to sell across state lines and didn't have to meet so many insane regulations, we would have actual competition which would drive prices down.
How can Sanders actually say that conservatives should support something that goes against every conservative (and Constitutional) principle there is? What has the government ever run better than private industry?

Single payer or no change. Obama and the republicans are just pushing corporate welfare for the insurance companies paid for by the working class.
