Clips on Margaret Beaufort, mother to Henry VII of England.

It was via his mother that Henry had a claim to the throne; Margaret was the great granddaughter of John of Gaunt, father to Henry IV of England and son of Edward III. However Margret descended from John's children via his mistress, Katherine Swynford (the Beaufort children). They were legitimised however their line was barred from the throne.

Richardians beware!! Starkey is not fan of Richard III and will take a dig at him any possible opportunity!

  • @supamajid probably the Bubonic Plague. It would hit London and England over and over again through out 14th, 15th, and 16th Centuries.

  • I have a question, would someone please tell me the name of the deadly plague that had came across Edmund Tudor, which had led to his death? Thanks

  • he only narrowly beat off the Yorkists...

  • @kendahke Actually, famous historian, Alison Weir, an expert in Tudor Monarchy, wrote in a biography I read, that even in medieval times, during noble/royal matches, when it was necessary, because of logistics or immediate political rallying, when a young child/girl was handed over in marriage, "gentlemen"/respectable men waited until a girl was at LEAST 14, even as late as 15-16, depending on the male's disposition. I imagine that because these weren't love matches, boys/men could be icy cold.

  • @blueguitarblue that's not how things worked in those days.

  • @supergirl011 considering most women died in childbirth in those days, it was not uncommon that once a girl presented with a period, she was considered old enough to marry and bear children. So much for the 'good ole' days'.

  • you don't know history until you have an English accent :D

  • @ijustlovetea Henry Tudor had every reason to kill Edward's sons. Do you think Perkin Warbeck was one of the Princes?

  • @kathCT Amen! Edmund could have post-poned the consumation. Perv.

  • @antoninus138 You're right. Are you referring to Katherine and her intense love affair with the amazing John Gaunt? They were together for years. He was devoted to her and their children. John was of noble birth and respected in royal circles; and, he used his position to legitamize his children born by Katherine. The love story between these legends is incredible. Genius historian, Alison Weir, wrote a biography about Katherine. A must read!
