Sound design is when you mix sound elements to give a scene an audible, tactile sensation. This must not be confused with the art of Foley, which is the craft of creating sound effects to match on-screen actions.

The best way to learn about sound design, hands on, is to shoot a short film without any recorded audio or dialog. Mix and match the sound elements you think will fit your creative vision; because sound design is a lot more open-ended than you think.

  • I thought you guys said editing was the unique element of cinema. Also, can't it be argued that sound design has existed since primitive forms of theatre?

  • @Owdene Don't believe everything you read/hear on the Internet, haha. We made a little mistake, I think. Sound Design is unique to radio. "Editing" is unique to filmmaking. But even that can be argued. Stories are told with continuity, which is essentially what editing is about, so books and plays and even cave drawings have really simple "editing" mechanics. Oh well. We're all still learning :)

  • last take was ...?

  • Pardon?

  • Great episode, as always. Was that red raincoat a reference to Don't Look Now? :)

  • Hmm, I don't think so. Actually, I'm not sure. Peter loves that movie, haha. I'll ask him :)

  • Good episode, though I'd like to correct you on the fact that sound is derived from radio. Think radio plays/radio theatre. I think the only element of film that is completly unique to film is editing (video editing to be specific).

Otherwise it's good, specially the whole phone bit.

  • What kind of cardioid do you use? Nice vid, I found you guys to be very informational. I am planning a horror film for Halloween.

Go to my videos, i hope you like it, i like this shit about the filming but i dont have good equipment, i do what i can do...

  • Well, we make sure our recording environment is absolutely silent, first of all. And then we have a high quality microphone. If you already recorded something and there's a lot of hiss, you can try cleaning up the audio in something like Adobe Soundbooth. Use a high pass filter or noise reduction :)

  • woot return of Rochelle!!!
