To mark the launch of the new Arts Council website, acclaimed visual artists Thomson & Craighead have created a bespoke new digital art commission.
Thomson & Craighead collaged together videos of people holding their breath underwater from YouTube transforming them from amateur videos into professional pocket-sized triptychs which make reference to the large-scale, three-screen projection installations.
Like most of Thomson & Craigheads online work, Several_Interruptions has been created using appropriation employing the process of collage to manipulate existing web-based material. The piece seeks to consider how information is mediated via the internet, and how users behaviours are engendered by online social networks.
What we learn here is that YouTube facilitates competitive posting between its users (each trying to outdo the other with their video responses).
Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead are fascinated about how global communications networks like the web are transforming the way we all perceive and understand the world around us.
Thomson & Craighead said 'We believe that this curious phenomenon documented on YouTube can be considered here to be symbolic 'interruptions' to the measured ongoing flow of life where every breath taken is itself a small measurement of our time in this world. At the same time this work constitutes a curious documentary narrative -one which shows us our online selves to ourselves via the emergence of social networking structures like YouTube.'
Arts Council England's mission for the next three years is 'great art for everyone' and they are working to champion, develop and invest in artistic experiences that enrich peoples lives. Their new website is essential viewing and stars a cast of new tools, features and content specially designed with Arts Professionals in mind.
