Original instrumental in Minor tuning.
Played on 1930's Regal wooden Dobro.
This is dedicated to the fantastic HBO TV series, 'Carnivale', set in the 1930's dust bowl, where Good and Evil face off, (in metaphor of course), very eerie and very compelling viewing, excellent character acting with heaps of atmospherics, thunderstorms and massive, amazing sepia toned blizzards, not to mention some great hillbilly, jazz and blues soundbites from the era.
Well anyway, that's what I was contemplating whilst creating this tune, almost makes me wanna run out and get my fortune read!

  • Cool unusual guitar!! Haven't seen one with a wood cover before!?

"Home made" perhaps? Or does it look like a facotry thing?

    Nice playing!!

  • @BottleneckJohn

Lovely playing , great old Regal. I've sent you a video response titled , Black Tulip Blues of my pre-war square neck ,Regal Dobro , circa 1930 ?

When I ran across your Regal video I was wondering if you may be able to help me further date my Regal , as it is very unusual , if you look closely it has the wooden cover plate with four sets of 12 holes ,.

I've written to Brozman, and still can't date it or find any records of wooden cover plates.

    Enjoy all your stuff

    Thanks

  • @deltablues4761

Still curious if you'd suspect the wooden cover to have been made after an original metal coverplate was broken maybe?

Never heard of this feature and that's why I ask.. It's really cool!!

  • @BottleneckJohn

No , wooden cover plate and body are consistently identical in grain, age and colour of wood.

    It has regular green

Regal decal , square neck , 12 fret to the neck, inverted dobro style aluminum cone and also WOODEN! !spider bridge, but sounds quite good still.

I'll re-send this clip if you want , as a video response to your Regal clip, as maybe others who view your clip may know something about mine.

    Regards

    Dean

  • Nice playing mate, which model of Regal Dobro is it?

  • @wehappyfewmusic

Thanks , it's a very early pre-war Regal with wooden cover plate , circa 1930 I guess, probably made in conjunction with National company but can't be sure, if you have any info on Regals with a wooden cover plate in 1930,s let me know

    Cheers

Fine lap style on Pay Day

  • This song is effing amazing. Seriously one of the coolest pieces I've ever heard on slide. In love with the minor tuning!

  • Thanks so much, it a 1930's Regal dobro , with a metal resonator cone, if you were unaware.

It was a HBO series Carnivale that inspired this track.

I loved that series, set in 1930's Texas dustbowl, magic , myth and the end of the world.

    Cheers Dean

  • very soulfull. sounds like something off a quentin terention soundtack. what do you call the style of guitar?

  • this is fantastic. I go through phases, and right now I'm on an folksy/americana/blues phase, and I just love this.
