I think the context that he is using "hate" in here isn't about downing ourselves or literally despising ourselves in a negative way but I think he was portraying how our love for Christ should be so great that our love for ourselves, or anyone else on this earth, looks like hate in comparison. It's about establishing God's worth in our hearts to a point that nothing else (our plans/dreams) are nothing if they aren't in line with where He is calling us to be & in what way He chooses to use us.

But you are right, hating the self is not the focus or even the goal, its to love Christ because he loved us first.
