  • Here's an idea. Hack an actual garage door opener. It has gears. Change the gear ratios. Voila, a faster garage door opener, but with lower torque however.

Ever see those scissor jack punching boxing gloves at joke shops? Lots of distance for a little amount of motion, but again lots of torque requried.

  • Nice try, but my idea would beat your quick fix hands down... @Underman1965

  • Nope. My idea would work faster. You only have to move the scissor action a small amount to get a great distance covered. On top of that, nobody has to figure out how to push the door down and suspend a 2nd motor on wheels.

The current garage door opener works well enough, I don't think many people are complaining of it's lack of speed.

  • I want the fastest garage door opener in the world. "More power", tim allen, home improvement... @UnderMan1965

  • The idea is bad. The back motor is moving the weight of the front motor plus the pulleys, plus the weight of the garage door. Another idea, use a scissor jack type of opener. It takes up a lot of space however, but will open the door very fast, as well as close it. The original garage door opener idea is pretty much the most efficient one, and the safest, as it has sensors to stop the door if an object gets in the way.

  • The bane of my existence, you are... My nemesis, you will be... LOL @UnderMan1965

  • Just increase the size of the sprocket to make the door open faster.

  • The only problem that I see with this idea is similar to the one that's encountered by Genie Excellerator openers. Most installers clip the resistor that enables the 2x opening speed because the door and related hardware ends up wearing out much faster. The rollers on the door, the hinges, etc. would all need to be much heavier to handle the speed involved.

  • I think you have way to much time on your hands, lol

  • Part 2

The Exelerators have had problems with buckling doors because of the speed.

Also, over time, that cord will probably snap.

  • Okay, I have a question. In a real garage door opener, like LiftMaster chain & belt drives, when the motor is inactive the gears lock it down. How would this lock? I don't mean to be rude, but anyone could walk up to it and shove the door open.

Also, the speed of these motors may put too much stress on the top section of door. If you search "Genie Exelerator" these openers open twice as fast and close at normal speeds so they don't knock anyone unconsious.

  • MAKE A BIGGER MOTOR. retard.

  • Lol... Develop Hologram and forcefield technology. Poof, no door, poof door.
