Construction continues on Hartsfield-Jackson's world-class rental car center to ensure the facility will be ready on time for customers in December 2009. The latest progress includes completion of the elevated track and the Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF), allowing for testing of the ATL SkyTrain and its automated control system.
The train will speed customers from the Airport stationl to the rental car center in approximately five minutes, and this testing will ensure that the ATL SkyTrain and control system have been properly installed, and that they will function properly to meet operational specifications. On January 11, 2009 a portion of the Mitsubishi-manufactured train traveled under its own power between the MSF to the passenger terminal station.
"We will continue our testing in May of all systems to ensure they all function to support the overall train system," said John Kapala, project manager. "Once preliminary testing is complete, the final phase of testing a full system demonstration will begin. To certify that the system is operational, reliable and ready for business, our engineers will run the entire train system 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week, as if it were in service."
To pass readiness testing, the train system must be at least 98.5 percent operational for 30 consecutive days before the system can be accepted. August and September will be dedicated for this key testing phase, and the Airport will take full ownership of the facility when the system runs in service for six consecutive months and meets a reliability of 99.5 percent.
