Grape pulp and seeds may be waste products in the wine industry, but to Endang Sri Astuti and her husband Moedayat Yanto, they are a valuable commodity.
Grape skin and seeds are high in polyphenols powerful antioxidants that scientists believe are beneficial to health and may even reduce the risk of cancer.
The couple, engineers by profession, stumbled upon the benefits when they started a simple grape juice business last year. The two then quit their jobs to expand their grape product business.
Astuti says the grape skin is the key ingredient in the products.
[Endang Sri Astuti, Engineer]:
"We began the business with grape juice and grape syrup. There was skin and seeds left after crushing out the juice and a little bit of flesh. But the most important thing is the skin."
The couple has invented a pressing machine for the home juice industry, which turns the waste, comprising of grape pulp, which is dried and then sold as grape pulp tea.
To make the grape pulp tea, they dry the pulp in the sun for 24 hours, crush the dregs into pellets and pack them into tea bags.
They also make something similar to coffee by heating the dried dregs in the stove until it turns black and then grind it before packing it as coffee in aluminum foil bags.
Astuti has named the product Inabun, from the Arabic word for grape, and the couple has developed various products from the grape waste.
[Endang Sri Astuti, Engineer]:
"The next month, we started a coffee and tea experiment. From there, we also tried to produce a face and body mask. Thank God these products have been well received."
A box of 20 tea bags sells for $1.30, while a 20 gram pack of coffee sells for 30 cents.
The products are sold online and the couple estimates they sell more than 500 boxes of tea and 100 packs of coffee a month.
Astuti requires 500 kilograms of grapes a month for her business, which began production last February, with distribution currently limited to the East Java province area.
I love it and will try it with my grapes.
