Interaction design is one of the newest specializations in the field of design. It's related to digital media, and it's concerned not only with the product, but on how to design the way in which users interact. It is a highly multidisciplinary field, which includes design (graphical, product and interface), psychology, sociology, communication science, anthropology, computer science, engineering, information and communication technologies, architecture and art.

Department of Visual Communication Design is organizing a series of workshops splitinteractions as an introduction to interaction design in Croatia. The workshops will further promote the interdisciplinary educational approach started with the successful Convivio Summer School in Split, 2004.

The second workshop was held in March 2007. The aim of this workshop was to introduce the students to user-oriented design processes and methodologies in practice.

The third workshop was held in March 2008. The topic of the workshop was "public space", and was focus on how interaction design could help to raise awareness of the importance of public space in Split both in students and in the citizens of the town.

This fourth workshop will be held from 23rd to 28th of March. In the context of construction of the new Arts Academy, the topic of the workshop will be how new technologies could improve learning via interaction processes.

Participants of the workshop will be students of design (visual communication and product), architecture, computer science, and sociology from the Universities of Split, Zadar, Rijeka and Zagreb.

The coordinator and workshop leader will be Ivica Mitrovic from the Visual Communications Design Department. There will be two groups/ateliers, one will be led by Chris Hand from School of Creative Industries, Edinburgh Napier University and other by freelance interaction designer Marc Owens from London.

Dr. Michael Smyth from School of Computing, Edinburgh Napier University will have an introduction lecture on interaction design.

Workshop results will be presented to the public at the Arts Academy on the 28th of March and documented at the Department web site.
