A few days ago, someone asked me if Tom Brier can play George Botsford's famous "Black and White Rag". This weekend at a ragtime music party jam session when people wondered what to play next, I mentioned that question.

At first we're waiting for YouTube's "verybigrifle" to change the memory card in his camera. You can see his video of this same performance here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tatCzCxffq8

My camera takes a long time to start up so I just let it run rather than risk missing the beginning while I stopped and deleted anything. And editing the video would lose considerable audio quality... so this is cinema vérité!

On the grand piano is Tom Brier. On the upright behind him are Jack & Chris Bradshaw. On the piano in the next room is Monty Suffern (though you can't really hear him from these angles). On flute is Julia Riley. On tuba is Robyn Drivon. On drums is Steve Drivon. On oboe is Pepper Rae. On violin is her granddaughter Soleil. On clarinet is Larisa Migachyov (who hadn't touched a clarinet in more than five years, she said).

  • Whats the name of the first song tom is playing?

  • @etermal07g It is nothing -- just a vamp.

  • @Keeper1st Do u know chords he is using?

  • @etermal07g Sounds like Bb, Bo, F7, F7 (then repeat those four), G7, G7, C7, C7, F7, F7, Bb. Bass notes are Bb, B, C, F, Bb, B, C, F, G, D, C, G, F, C, Bb. I don't have perfect pitch, but that makes the most sense. Of course an F7 chord as the quick bass notes go up F, G, A to repeat the vamp.

  • Brings back lots of childhood memories from when this tune was used as the theme for a BBC snooker programme on TV here in the U.K. called 'Pot Black' :)) Great playing by Tom here and thanks again for all the videos!
