The R&GVRRM rosters two small 0-4-0 steam locomotives, both of which are under evaluation for restoration back to operation. One of the engines was built by the Vulcan Iron Works in 1918 for the Brooklyn Navy Yard as their #12. The locomotive was donated by a private individual in 1997. Located at a small railroad museum in Flemingville, NY, the #12 had to be trucked to the R&GVRRM's museum in Rush, NY.

This video highlights the loading of the engine on a low boy trailer which was outfitted with an custom built ramp and rail set built by the R&GVRRM. Without a locomotive to shove the locomotive on to the trailer, a block and tackle system was used to pull the locomotive on the trailer. An initial attempt is made with a 1-ton truck pulling on the cable, but it doesn't have enough so something larger is used to successfully load the engine for its trip to the R&GVRRM on this rainy November 4, 1997.

The R&GVRRM welcomes all donations to help us return this steam engine to operation.

  • nice video, do you work for them?

  • This is the official YouTube site for the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum. We are an all volunteer group, and I am just one of the volunteers. As one of my contributions to the museum, I produce the videos on the site from my footage or footage shot by our other members.

  • is the locomotive operational yet?

  • The locomotive is not, but is currently in our shop. We recently had a boiler survey done on the engine and are waiting the report to see what we will need to do in terms of work and fundraising to return her to steam. Donations are always welcome as are new hands to help us reach our goal of having steam running at our museum. Thanks for the interest.

  • I think there is one of these in Bellingham, WA. At Bloedel Donovan Park.

  • At 00:54, I can hear the cylinders blowing and sucking air. Obviously, this means that they're in good (if not functional) condition. I hope the restoration goes well for you guys. My ultimate dream is to get a little 0-4-0 tank engine and restore it to operational shape.

  • will it run

  • wonder what the engine was thinking...

  • So where was the engine that you had to move it ?

  • looks like charlie from thomas and friends

  • Almost looks like a B&O Dockside.
