From what I understand, Mark was live, and when the back vocals weren't piped in, sometimes they used a harmonizer, but it was a 50/50 shot and based on if they felt like doing back vocals...who knows how often they were actually live?
I just saw that Journey show last night. They had canned vocals for sure. The new guy singing lead was great though. You could tell he had great vocal training.
Yes, definitely sampled backup vocals. True, everyone did it back then. Some still are. I was surprised to hear what sounded to me like sampled backups on Journey's performance at the Download Festival on VH1 Classic. That band is known for its harmonies.
I saw VVI in 86 NYC, They always used the canned vocals. Every time the back ups would start Vinny would be late to the mike. It was Glam at its best! Everone was doing it at the time.
Stryper were the first i remember seeing use the big prerecorded back ups. Sad because all those guys could sing.
@twoo57 They've been using backup vocals for years. I'd say at least since the Girls Girls Girls tour.

@parisblue3 Yes indeed, I've recently seen Motley Crue yesterday. Backup vocals were diffenitely used. Well, for Nikki, and Tommy were.

I just noticed that his Carvin heads, which he didn't use, have the "Car" out of it and just "Vin".
