graphic does not always mean that it's got sex or violence; were that the case what would that be sayin about a movie with good graphics? would it have to be rated r because the word 'graphic' was used in the review? all that word means is giving a clear an effective picture, not that the picture is inappropriate.
however, i will aggree that many comic books an graphic novels alike are gettin more an more adult themes in content. but many have a rating on the back, teen, mature etc

The reason it's called a graphic novel and not simply labeled as a comic book is because it's not on-going. They usually have complex story lines and tend to be aimed at the adult audience, but that's got nothing to do with the name.
