  • An excellent version of this old chestnut. The diminished chord at 4:03 is very interesting! I would like to hear the original version of this song by Ren Guang (任光), which I think may have been used in a movie in the 1930s. Do you think you could find the original version (as for example we have of Zhou Xuan from her movie "Street Angel" 马路天使)?

  • @dbadagna This original song from the movie is a real rarity. I have not heard of it to be frank. I must relay this request to my old friend in Malaysia. I will come back to you when I have some news from him - about the song and the movie.

Thank you--maybe the film (I do not know the title) could be found on DVD or VCD? The reason I ask is because my Chinese music ensemble plays this piece, but in terms of the arrangement, there are so many different versions as to which chords are used, and also a lot of variation in the last section (which starts at 3:49). For example, the song was simplified a lot by Cantonese pop singers. I think there are so many different versions because there's no original "Urtext" to go on.

  • @dbadagna I have heard even old versions of this great piece. They are very similar in the beginning but differs slightly towards the end. Yes, the diminished part is interesting because Chinese musical notes rarely utilised the beauty of it. Modern versions from even the best folk orchestra from Guangdong and Shanghai tend to be very fast in tempo. I have bought some CDs but never enjoy listening to them. I still prefer the old school!

  • @dbadagna What sort of Chinese instrument do you play?

  • So glad I come across this upload. I feel so nostalgic on listening to it and looking at your video pic of the record sleeve. Cos my late father has this record and used to play it loudly in the house in the old days and I grew up recognising and loving this tune as well.. .

You can find photos at Flickr (same username), and videos at YouTube, by searching for Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble. We also have Facebook and MySpace pages.

We will actually be performing "Si Ji Ge" for the first time next week, using the same arrangement from the original movie, which I wrote out. We'll use dizi, pipa, guzheng, dahu, and guban (we don't have erhu or sanxian).

  • @jbhchan

I play mainly sheng, houguan, yehu, suona, dahu, qinqin, and sometimes percussion. I've also played zhongruan, sanxian, and yueqin, but not as much.
