@TheTinyIT Thanks for getting back to me. I went ahead and got rid of most everything on it. The biggest space hog was windows. Getting rid of that freed up a lot of space. I was a bit nervous towards the end of the backup, afraid it would run out of space at the end, but it got through it. Thanks for your videos and help, appreciate it.

@CSI0Viet0Nam If she hasn't backed it up then she may be out of luck. The first thing I would try is right clicking on the parent folder and go to properties. From there see if there is a "previous versions" tab. This is where shadow copies of files/folders are made and you can restore it to a previous date in time. If there are no previous versions then you might want to try a recovery program called "Recuva" just google it and you can download a free version. GOOD LUCK!

@maickaa187 You just open NTbackup and browse to the .bak file you want to restore.

Could you give me a link? My mom lost a very important folder so I need it.

@TheGMANKiller875 Will the PC boot into Windows? If so, then you just run NTBACKUP and restore the files that way. If the PC won't boot into Windows then you will have to re install XP and then just start NTBACKUP and restore the files from there. Let me know if you need more help.

I've got a question. I have a hard drive from another machine which I have set up for a backup drive. Should I wipe out everything from that hard drive and start clean or are some files or settings that I need to leave on it?

@desertrose58 First of all I hope your username is a Sunny reference. You don't have to wipe everything off a drive to use it for backup, you can just make a folder to store your backups on the drive.

@TheTinyIT Thanks for the reply. I started doing the backup and got about 3/4 done and ran out of space, so I will have to eliminate some stuff. My follow up question is, is there anything on this hard drive that is essential for its operation? If so, how would I identify them or it? I don't use this hard drive for anything other than a backup.

@desertrose58 No files are essential for a hard disk drive to operate, so it's up to you whether or not you can delete them or not.
