Whether or not you believe this hit by Raffi Torres of the Vancouver Canucks on Edmonton's Jordan Eberle is a hockey play, it's a hit that's no longer welcome in today's NHL -- a fact, one imagines, that will be reinforced when the League's Wheel of Discipline gets spinning for Torres.

The hit, at 13:05 of the third period on Tuesday night, resulted in Torres getting 5 minutes for elbowing, 5 for fighting and a game misconduct; Ryan O'Marra of the Oilers earned 5 for fighting.

Thanks to the great Wyshynski over at Puck Daddy for the story.

  • I can agree that the hit on Seabrook was a head shit, but this call was total horse shit. Eberle was reaching out for the puck, clearly shoulder-to-shoulder contact. Ridiculous

  • torres couldve just got the puck, instead he goes for the hit when eberle is in a bad position. Eberle didnt even have the puck so that could be deemed as interference aswell.

  • wow everyone wants to turn hockey into fucking curling, good hit.

  • @tagerung90 So I just want to be clear on where you stand. If any player turns their head away from ANY player approaching them then that is considered a blind hit/ headshot and the hitter deserves a penalty as well as suspension. If a player drops their head or is skating with their head down then they too are also 'off limits' for a check regardless of location or puck possession.

At some point the fans need to stop rewarding poor play and recognize that they're watching a contact sport.

  • Eberle looks at the ref right before he puts his head down...

  • @RichiRicheh Torres knew he was guilty. I'm super happy he got canned, as soon as he dumped seabrook, black hawks annihilated the canucks right up till OT game 7 right from that point on, that series should have been done in 4 the way the hawks played. The hit happened and the Canucks knew they were in for a rough ride.

  • @sylvanlange16 it was interference

  • I'm a Chicago fan, & I like the Oilers, but this was a HORRIBLE call. Clean check.

  • A second before Eberle got smoked, he ducked his head down. Torres was already commited to the check, there was no way he could've avoided or minimized contact. Don't like that call.

  • thats not a headshot
