So Close Yet So Far (Chapter 1)

"Ms. Cooper!" I sort of subconsciously heard in my sleep. "Ms. Cooper!" It was louder this time, and I finally woke up. I lifted my head from the sweatshirt pillow I had made myself on my desk. I hadn't even bothered to take out my books at the beginning of class. Mr. Jackson's history class always meant a good nap. I rose my face to see Mr. Jackson himself standing over me, looking pissed as hell.
"What's up Mr. J?" I said drowsily and the class giggled under their breath.
"Oh, you know, just trying to teach a class here."
"Have fun with that," I said, putting my head back down.
"I'm sorry if I'm disrupting your nap, Ms. Cooper..."
"No worries," I said, interrupting him.
"BUT," he continued. He was getting angrier by the second. "I had this crazy idea that maybe you could learn some history in history class."
"Well, that makes one of us."
"You know what else makes one of us?" he snapped, his face now tomato red. "The fact that you're going to the principal's office."
"Awesome, haven't seen Tommy all day," I said, and the class couldn't contain their laughs.
"Go!" Mr. Jackson snapped, so I collected my stuff and went to the door. "And I'm calling the office, so actually go, Riley."
I turned to him. "You know? You talk, but all I hear is blah blah blah."
"Go!" he snapped again.
"Chill out, I'm going," I said before he slammed the door shut behind me. I took my sweet time going to Principal Scott's office. I stopped to put my stuff in my locker and get some gum. I stopped in front of my friend Jessie's classroom to make faces at her through the little window. And then I saw it. On the the bulletin board, right there in my school's hallway, was an ad for the Jonas Brothers' new CD. I grabbed the paper down and tore it into pieces. Then I threw the tiny pieces up in the air and let them scatter.
See I wasn't always like this, I mean, all angry, defiant, troublesome, apathetic about everything. I guess it was when i was 14 when everything started going downhill. That was when my best friend left. He and I had grown up together, and we did everything together. But he and his brothers got a record deal and started getting really busy. Then I found out they were leaving for months. The night before they were leaving, Joe kissed me. He promised me that things wouldn't change, and at first it was okay. He called every day, but then, just like that, he didn't call for 2 months and when he tried to call I just ignored it. That was almost 3 years ago. Since then they've been traveling the country, getting on Disney channel, and becoming the biggest musical craze of our time. And while his dreams were coming true, mine were falling apart as I changed completely.
I reached the principal's office. "Hey Tom," I said. He stared at me. "Thomas?" Still staring. "Mr. Scott?" still staring. "Fine. Dr. Scott. Hello, Dr. Scott."
"Better. Bout time you showed up. Mr. Jackson called 10 minutes ago."
"Ran into traffic."
"Sure," he said, picking up the trash can and holding it in front of my mouth. I reluctantly spit out my gum. "OK, now, what causes you to grace us with your prescience today?"
"Well, just hadn't seen you yet today, wanted to see how you were doing."
"All right, Riley, that's enough. What are you doing falling asleep in class?"
"Sleeping?"
"Riley, I'm bored with your games." I couldn't help but hear the song in my head. "Are you not getting enough sleep at night?"
I probably should've gone with that excuse, try to gain some sympathy. But my smart mouth took over. "I guess, and Mr. Jackson is just SO boring."
He sighed. "Just be in detention today."
"Awesome. Is Bob overseeing today?"
"Mr. McCarthy is overseeing. And I'll put him on red alert for you."
"That's hurtful, Tom."
"Riley Cooper, if you call me Tom one more time..."
"Sorry sir," I mumbled. I wasn't having as much fun anymore. My quota of Principal Office Time for the day had been filled.
"All right, go to your next class, and Riley, try to to stay awake."
"No promises," I said as I left the office.

{Joe's P.O.V.}
I walked to the lounge in the back of the tour bus. I found Nick and Kevin playing video games. I went and flopped down on the couch. "Did you tell Riley we're coming back?" Kevin asked me. I hadn't told them that I hadn't talked to Riley in years. I knew it was all my fault. I had gotten too caught up in all the music stuff that I had managed to forget her, and every day after that I regretted it. I just couldn't tell them. I was too ashamed.
"No, I wanna surprise her," I answered. And, boy, will she be surprised.
"She's gonna be so excited," Nick said.
"I sure hope so," I said, even though I knew there was no point in hoping for the impossible.

awesome story! Why are you putting this on youtube??? this should be a book! that is my honest opinion and while you continue with this excellent series, i would suggest putting the words into the video instead of in the comments but still, excellent story so far!
